BioMedia® – our unique filter material

Swedish Hydro Solutions’ BioMedia® is a uniquely developed filter material produced from pyrolyzed wood. The heating process creates a media with a large surface area and high treatment capacity. BioMedia® resembles activated carbon but has a different surface chemistry, giving it a higher ability to sorb and bind the substances that need to be removed from the water.

A broad and highly effective filtration media

The specially developed media used in our BioMedia® filters effectively treats water containing heavy metals such as copper, lead, and zinc. BioMedia® is also used in all our systems designed to manage hexavalent chromium.

It is equally effective against various organic contaminants — ranging from oil‑based compounds to chlorinated pollutants. BioMedia® has also proven to be effective in the treatment of PFAS.

Stable for thousands of years

If the spent media does not contain harmful substances, it can be used as fill material on land. It also works exceptionally well as a growing medium, as it creates a favorable environment for microbes and mycorrhizae while preventing nutrient leakage for plants.

BioMedia® also functions as a carbon sink because it remains stable for thousands of years and does not release carbon dioxide, while simultaneously preventing the emission of other greenhouse gases.

BioMedia® removes dissolved contaminants more effectively than any competing filtration technology on the market.

Easy to use

No special skills are required from the user. After a short introduction, anyone can install, operate, and service the filters.

Environmentally friendly

BioMedia® is an environmentally friendly filter media made from pyrolyzed wood. The raw material used is a by‑product from the forestry industry.

Practical mesh bags

The BioMedia® used in our gravity filters is packed in practical mesh bags. Because any remaining particles in the water are not forced into the media bed, the filter maintains its performance over a long period of time. When it is eventually time to replace the media, it is delivered in convenient mesh bags for easy handling. Often, it is sufficient to clean or replace only the top layer.
