RedOx3 – reduces hexavalent chromium

RedOx3 is Swedish Hydro Solutions’ proprietary reducing agent for managing hexavalent chromium. The product was originally developed in our own laboratory for a project commissioned by the Swedish Transport Administration.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺) is toxic and hazardous to humans even at low concentrations. It is carcinogenic and harmful to human health, and it is also toxic to many aquatic organisms, with potential impacts on reproduction in fish and other species.

Hexavalent chromium is water‑soluble and highly mobile. It does not bind effectively to soil particles, which means it is transported with groundwater flow through soil layers and can spread into the groundwater. Without active treatment, hexavalent chromium is difficult to stop, making it essential to implement treatment measures directly at the source of contamination.

How we treat water containing Cr⁶⁺

RedOx3 is Swedish Hydro Solutions’ proprietary product for reducing hexavalent chromium to the less water‑soluble trivalent form, which can then be removed in our treatment processes. The product was originally developed in Swedish Hydro Solutions’ laboratory for a project carried out for the Swedish Transport Administration. Hexavalent chromium is a common contaminant in construction and infrastructure projects, for example during the production or handling of cement. It can also occur during injection grouting, when cement trucks are washed, as well as during the demolition of older concrete.
