HydroBox – the heart of our treatment systems

In a typical project from Swedish Hydro Solutions, the HydroBox serves as the core of the water treatment system. It primarily contains a patented dosing system that ensures precise application of the unique flocculant chitosan, while also handling the dosing of other additives—such as RedOx3 for the reduction of hexavalent chromium.

The HydroBox serves as the system’s dosing and control unit, where flocculation takes place. Chitosan is passively dosed as water flows through the system, meaning the dosage is automatically adjusted to match the flow rate.

As contaminated water is pumped through the HydroBox, chitosan is introduced directly into the flow—without the need for added freshwater. The pumping action creates natural mixing, allowing flocculation to begin immediately.

During flocculation, fine particles and particle-bound contaminants bind together to form larger flocs, enabling the subsequent sedimentation process to occur significantly faster and more efficiently.

For the treatment of other types of contaminants, the HydroBox can also dose additional treatment agents via pumps. For example, the reducing agent RedOx3 can be added to reduce dissolved substances such as hexavalent chromium.

Chitosan – the flocculant used in HydroBox

Chitosan is used in the HydroBox to flocculate particles and particle-bound contaminants. It is a biodegradable substance derived from crab shells—a byproduct of the seafood industry.

Efficient

HydroBox can treat up to 50 m³ per hour and can be efficiently scaled to handle higher flow rates when needed.

Biodegradable

The flocculant chitosan is fully biodegradable and derived from crab shells, a byproduct of the seafood industry.

Safe to use

HydroBox features separate chemical storage for improved operator safety, and chitosan is safer than traditional chemicals.

It sounded somewhat unusual to utilize chitosan, a polymer extracted from crab shells. However, it is evidently effective. We have also installed new filters and are now approaching a point where we can hardly detect any previous contaminations in the outgoing water. No other supplier, employing various technologies, has come close to achieving similar results.

Configuration and capacity

The HydroBox is insulated and heated to operate in demanding environments and can be easily deployed across a wide range of projects.

The HydroBox is available in different sizes, with capacity tailored to the needs of each project:

  • 10-foot container
  • 20-foot container
  • Mobile trailer system

Depending on size, the system can handle everything from low flow rates up to approximately 50 m³ per hour, with the ability to scale up as needed.

Cloud-based monitoring

The HydroBox also contains the hardware required to transmit data to our cloud based monitoring service, enabling real time supervision of the treatment plant. Standard parameters reported include flow rate, pH, turbidity, and conductivity, with additional parameters available upon request.

In collaboration with our customers, alarms can be configured for specific threshold values, allowing corrective actions to be taken well before regulatory limits are exceeded. The HydroBox also includes a number of built in safety functions. For example, the control system can regulate the pumps supplying water to the treatment plant. If inflow increases dramatically due to external factors, the system can automatically stop the incoming water feed, thereby eliminating the risk of flooding.
