The Hamnbanan Railway Link in Gothenburg Completed
2024.10.04
The Hamnbanan railway link in Gothenburg is a vital connection between the Port of Gothenburg and the Swedish rail network. The project, carried out in three phases, aimed to improve the capacity and efficiency of transport flows between the port and the inland – a crucial aspect for Sweden's export and import activities.
The project has been ongoing for several years and is part of a larger initiative to improve the infrastructure around Gothenburg. By increasing the railway's capacity, the climate impact from truck transport is also expected to decrease as more freight flows can be shifted to rail.
Swedish Hydro Solutions has been responsible for treating the stormwater runoff from the construction, which has just been completed and is now ready for freight traffic. The project was technically complex, involving the construction of a 1.1 km long rock tunnel, extensive earthworks, and major concrete works – all carried out very close to residential areas developed over the last few decades.
Additionally, the railway route passes through the sensitive Krokängsparken nature reserve, which placed even higher demands on water treatment.
Between 2020 and 2024, Swedish Hydro Solutions operated several treatment systems of varying sizes. These systems were relocated several times along the route and handled various pollutants and drill cuttings from the tunnel construction.
Now, the project is complete, and in connection with last weekend’s inauguration of the Hamnbanan, we would like to share the results from Swedish Hydro Solutions' water treatment work from one of the phases.
