The technology behind wheel washers

A wheel washer consists of two parts: the actual washing technology and water recycling. The more efficient the washing technology, the more dirt needs to be separated from the water during recycling. Washing technology and water recycling are closely interconnected. By coordinating them, a solution is created that meets customers' high demands for functionality and price.

The washing technology

Tests involving various water pressures, nozzle shapes, sizes, and angles of water jets have demonstrated that using a substantial volume of water at low pressure yields the most effective outcomes. Although employing a larger volume of water at higher pressure would enhance cleaning, the relative increase in energy consumption is substantial. The most favorable results are achieved by employing a robust jet (minimum 6mm in diameter) at low pressure (maintaining a consistent direction from the nozzle outlet until it reaches the tires or chassis). In comparison to a thin high-pressure jet, it handles air resistance better, delivering the entire kinetic energy to the contact point on the vehicle. To achieve this outcome, specialized "MobyPump" - submersible pumps developed by Frutiger are utilized. Connecting them in series ensures a low inlet flow.

Water recycling

The robust submersible pumps do not require clean water to function. They can operate efficiently even with slightly turbid water and still clean the wheels effectively. The aim is a clear road, not a shiny vehicle. To achieve satisfactory water quality, intelligent, combined recycling tanks equipped with baffle walls and overflow systems are utilized. Post-washing, the water undergoes sedimentation within the tanks.

These tanks are adaptable to the available space. If desired by the client, the method for removing mud can be tailored, for instance, by using a chain conveyor. Generally, refraining from using additional equipment to separate mud and water, such as lamella cleaners or cyclone separators, is preferred. This is due to significant drawbacks including acquisition costs, maintenance expenses, winter operation, sludge removal, and others.
