Hamnbanan i Göteborg
20.02.24
Recently, Swedish Hydro Solutions received an order from Skanska to manage water treatment for the expansion of the Hamnbanan railway link in Gothenburg. The demand for freight transport by rail is continuously increasing, which is why the single-track railway link is being converted into a double track.
The Hamnbanan project consists of three phases, two of which are already completed: the Pölsebo-Skandiahamnen stretch and the Kville shunting yard with the Marieholm Bridge. The final stretch, Eriksberg-Pölsebo, is 1.9 kilometers long and runs from approximately Eriksberg Shopping Center to the Älvsborg Bridge.
Swedish Hydro Solutions will be responsible for the treatment of stormwater runoff from the construction, which is expected to be ready for freight traffic by December 2023. The project itself is technically complex, as it includes the construction of a 1.1-kilometer-long rock tunnel, extensive earthworks, and large-scale concrete works — all in close proximity to residential areas developed in the past decades. Additional care must also be taken to protect the sensitive natural area, Krokängsparken, which places even higher demands on the water treatment process.
Swedish Hydro Solutions will begin its work as early as February 2020 and expects to have up to four treatment plants operating simultaneously at different locations within the project.
– There is a lot happening at once, says Anders Lindqvist, CEO of Swedish Hydro Solutions. The long tunnel is being built to free up space for a few thousand more homes, a new artificial turf field is being constructed for Eriksbergs IF, and we have both residential areas and protected natural areas to take into consideration.
– Swedish Hydro Solutions has the knowledge and technology to handle all these challenges in a sustainable and economically advantageous way. We have demonstrated this through the projects we’ve successfully completed in the past, Anders continues.
– And it feels great to be part of the Hamnbanan project. Freight traffic from Gothenburg’s port is increasing, and this stretch is an important link in Sweden’s entire transport system. We are pleased to contribute our expertise and ensure that water treatment is managed both efficiently and sustainably.
